Lake Carina

It was a beautiful day today in Lake County! 80° for the high, sunny, and a warm wind. A far cry from the 40° we were seeing last week.  So before the clouds rolled in, we headed out for a walk. I was going to go the Fourth Lake, but after going to the LCPD.org website to check on directions, I saw it was closed. They're working on Millennium Trail. So it was off to Lake Carina.

This little preserve is right on Milwaukee Road near Gages Lake Road. It has a small lake with a grass trail just a mile around the lake. It's a short walk, but near the highway, so a little noisy. There was a little fishing pier right at the entrance. It seemed to be a great place to relax and fish and got busy as the afternoon went on. By the time we left it had about eight people enjoying the sun shine and fishing.

We saw some sort of bird in the water and thought it might be a duck. It wasn't close enough to make out and it was sitting down low in the water. So it was hard to tell.  But we brought our binoculars and got a better look. It was a common loon. I had never seen one before, so it was pretty exciting! It was a longer bird with a black head and body. It's wings have white spots on it. It would dive under the water for about two or three minutes and then come back up for a short breath and go back down again.

Other than the loon, there weren't many birds out there today, but it made up for it with the frogs. They were making a lot of noise.

It was a good walk and a treat at the local Tasty Freeze with everyone else enjoying the warm weather made it that even better! Enjoy your outdoors. See you at the next Preserve.
